The 3 steps towards driving independently

Under current legislation, there are 3 steps you need to go through before you receive your driving licence. You'll need a provisional driving licence before beginning lessons. Application forms are available from your local post office. You do not have to have passed your theory test to begin lessons. Theory test certificate is valid for 2 years from the pass date.

Your theory test requires you to score 43 out of 50 points in a multiple choice quiz and 44 out of 75 in the Hazard Perception section. I'll help you prepare with hints, tips and revision advice.

The practical test

The test will last for approximately 40 minutes on various types of roads including dual carriageways. You will be asked to carry out a specific manoeuvre and possibly an emergency stop. Approximately 20 minutes of the test will be following sat nav directions. 1 in 5 tests will not use sat nav but candidates will be asked to follow road signs for a similar length of time. A show me and a tell me question will be asked before and during the test.

The result is given immediately at the end of the test.
